Soon after the Prime Ministers broadcast announced the surrender of Japan, huge crowds began to celebrate in Harwich and Dovercourt.
Searchlights swept the sky and ships sirens sounded. Special services,bonfires in the evenings, marked the V.J. Day festivities.
